Current Events during Vacation!

Week 1:

Story 1–The Health Care bill has passed and has been signed.

This video is the president’s speech about the bill’s passage on March 22nd.

I’ll have more as the week goes on. Do you think the Health Care law will have an effect on your family?

Story 2 –Google may leave China because of censorship issues.

Read more about it here. What do you feel are the pros and cons of Google moving its search engine out of China?

Story 3–March Madness

I’ll have more about this later in the week.

The men’s college Sweet Sixteen teams play starting Thursday. You can read about the teams here: My sister went to St. Mary’s so I’ll root for them, and Cornell has been surprising everyone, they’re a “Cinderella” team, so I’ll root for them too! Who are your picks? Why did they win or lose? Here’s a link to one slideshow, I’ll update it as the tournament goes on. Week 2

Story 1 — Happy April Fool’s Day at Google

You can read the story here, but I know it’ll be blocked at school, so here’s the first paragraph:

4/01/2010 12:01:00 AM “Early last month the mayor of Topeka, Kansas stunned the world by announcing that his city was changing its name to Google. We’ve been wondering ever since how best to honor that moving gesture. Today we are pleased to announce that as of 1AM (Central Daylight Time) April 1st, Google has officially changed our name to Topeka.”

What name would you prefer for Google? Did you pull any good April Fool’s jokes? Or did someone fool you?

Week 3

Story 1: The Easter Earthquake

Did you feel it? I know my family did! Here’s some information from National Geographic.

I hope any relatives you may have from that area are safe. Where were you when it happened?

New at Google…

Here’s an experimental Google Image search, it’s called Google Image Swirl. Try it, it’s a different way to search for images. It searches for an image then groups similar results together. This has to be tried at home since LMS blocks Google Images. However, the next one you should be able to use at school.

Google developed its Image Swirl as related to the Google Search “Wonder Wheel.” I have never seen Wonder Wheel, and I think you might like it!

If you search on Google, click on “Show Options.”

Google1Then click on “Wonder Wheel” (look down on the left):

Google2You’ll get search results that are categorized and help you narrow your search. Here’s an example:
